Homeowner Stories

I was sharing a very old single wide trailer with my mother and five foster children. The home was not only overcrowded but it did not meet the city codes for residing in. I had been a foster mother for many years and this was the only income I received. Once I purchased my Habitat home, I was able to adopt all five of my foster children. In the new house there was more room for everyone and it was safe for my family. Home ownership gave me the empowerment to do more to provide for my family. I sought out community programs that gave me the confidence and skills to go out into the workplace and find employment. I am now getting paid outside the home to do what I love most, work with children.

I was born and raised in public housing and most of my family still lives there. I worked really hard to purchase my Habitat home and seeing that I could own my own home gave me the courage to pursue higher education. I finished school and now work in the medical field. My daughter is attending college now and we were the first in my family to do so. Habitat changed my life.

We were renting a house that had sewage retention problem and severe mold. The neighborhood had a very high crime rate and it was an unsafe environment to raise our children. I was laid off from my job and it was all we could afford. One of my sons became very ill from the mold and my other son was constantly beaten up and harassed by local gang members to join their gang. My wife and I were forced to do something to protect our children so they moved in with their grandmother. We turned to Habitat for help and worked very hard to purchase our home. Though it was a hardship being separated from our children for awhile, it was worth it. Our family is back together. My one son is healthy and the other has had no more problems with gangs and crime.

When my twin girls turned 17, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I had to quit my job of 17 years because of health issues and my girls decided that college was out of the question because of lack of funds. I had worked so hard to own my own home and I thought that dream was now out of the question since I couldn’t work anymore, but Habitat worked with me and helped me realize my dream. When my girls saw what I had done, they were encouraged and not only finished high school but also attended college. One of my daughters owns her own business and now that I am not worried about their futures, I am better able to work on remaining healthy and enjoy the comforts of my own home.
