Welcome to Savannah's Habitat:
The Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity!
Since its founding in 1983, the Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity (the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International) and its supporters have built 99 homes for Savannah, Georgia families. Our program is designed to make home ownership possible for low-income families that don't qualify for traditional loans, but have demonstrated the ability to repay a Habitat mortgage and are in urgent need of a safe, decent place to live.
As an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI), the Coastal Empire office coordinates all aspects of Habitat home building in the Savannah area, including site selection. Each affiliate coordinates all aspects of Habitat home building in its local area - fundraising, building site selection, partner family selection and support, house construction and mortgage servicing.
Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds simple, decent and affordable houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families.
Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with zero interest mortgages. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses. Habitat offers a hand up, not a hand out. In addition to the monthly mortgage payment, partner families invest 350 hours of their own labor - sweat equity - into building their home and the homes of others.
