Well, we finally replaced the old AC system with a brand new one. Customers and staff have been extremely grateful. Now customers can feel cool and relaxed while shopping at the ReStore.
We have been very blessed to receive many wonderful donations from the community and local businesses. We have been hard at work processing those donations such as fifty brand new kitchen cabinets from Kitchen Design Solutions, a trailer load of Keter outdoor furniture and multiple pieces of home furniture from Ashley Furniture. We cannot forget SCAD for donating multiple truckloads of chairs, desks, and furnishings. A big thank you to Kit Trainor who volunteers her time and expertise to help merchandise our sales floor and refreshes our store look on a regular basis. Customers always say how nice the store looks after Kit has worked her magic. Sadly, Matt, our customer service associate moved on to teach in Columbia, South America. In his replacement, we have brought on two new customer service associates, Aimee and Terena, to help the ReStore serve our customers in a fun, fast and friendly manner. Through all the generous donations, wonderful volunteers and hardworking staff, our Restore was able to generate $662,000 in sales this last fiscal year. That amount is the equivalent to building 4 Habitat homes! Kaitlin Sells Our Annual Meeting took place on June 27th at SCAD's Poetter Hall. During the meeting, our outgoing Board Chair, Kirk Gilbert, presented where we’ve been and where we are going. Our prior Executive Directors Virginia Brown and Harold Tessendorf were honored as we concluded our 40th year anniversary. Annette Ogletree-McDougal was introduced as our incoming Board Chair and made a few remarks. “Former President Bill Clinton once said, ‘We cannot build our own future without helping others to build theirs.’ I hope people will help us build everlasting homes for people. Come help us to make a difference,” said Ogletree-McDougal. Volunteers were also recognized as the backbone of the Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity (CEHFH), contributing thousands of hours annually. Two volunteers were honored, Mr. and Mrs. Nutt, who received the 2024 Love and Commitment Award. The CEHFH incoming board members were introduced: DeLisa Clift, Meechelle Kent, Kelly Johnson, Raydell Martin, Kurtina Pollen, Kit Trainor, and Temperance West. Kaitlin Sells Our CEO, Zerik Samples, reported that the Port Wentworth Development Project groundbreaking took place on June 17th. This is a mixed-unit project that will provide a total of 83 units, comprising of 15 single-family detached homes and 17 quadruplex units. The Construction Team, led by Mr. Deidrick Cody and assisted by an unwavering group of volunteers known as the Hammerheads, play a crucial role in ensuring these homes are built safely and in a timely manner.
As our building process is heavily reliant on volunteers from the local community, as well as corporate and faith-based sponsors, the Construction Team is proud to announce the completion of our current home this month. Over the last four months, our community volunteers, along with our Hammerheads, have worked side by side with future homeowners, performing a variety of tasks ranging from framing walls to painting, landscaping, and everything in between. This volunteer-driven approach not only reduces construction costs, making homes more affordable, but also strengthens community bonds and raises awareness about the housing crisis in the region. The Construction Team is very proud to be part of the Habitat family and look forward to building many more affordable homes in the future. We will begin our next project on W. 53rd Street in the month of September. We are always looking for volunteers to join us as we help build homes, communities, and hope. Sign up today at Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity (volunteerhub.com) As the Volunteer Coordinator, I couldn’t be happier working alongside the individuals who generously give their time, talent, and treasure to execute the mission of Habitat for Humanity. Our volunteers are the nuts and bolts of organization. From the delightful youth groups, ambitious college groups, all the way down to our gratifying Team Builds, we’ve got a lot to be grateful for. In June, we had Alida Hotel and CarMax both come out to participate in group builds with us. Both companies were extremely excited to assist in the completion of our active Habitat home. They were successful in building a stronger relationship amongst each other while giving back to the community. We also partnered with Xcel Summer Camp. This partnership was to support Xcel <<Jeramiah: show Xcel as hyperlink to company website XCEL HOME - Xcel (xceltoday.com) >> in their venture to provide information and resources to middle and high school students about organizations right here in the local community. These students were able to learn how to build a wall; instilling confidence, community, and hope as they continue to grow. In July, we had YouthWorks come volunteer in our ReStore for an entire month! YouthWorks is a faith-based organization that specializes in mission trips around the world. They send groups of young adults to volunteer at non-profit organizations instilling the love of Jesus Christ. Our partnership has been ongoing for ten years. This year, on their last day of service, young adults participated in an interactive activity with our CEO, Zerik Samples, for some fun. Overall, June and July have both been rewarding as the Volunteer Coordinator. I’m looking forward to the months ahead! |
